Key facts

• Isotretinoin capsules start to work after a week to 10 days. At the beginning of treatment, your skin may get worse before it starts to improve.
• You will have a blood test before you start taking isotretinoin, and regular blood tests during your treatment to check for side effects.
• Your lips and skin may become very dry and sensitive to sunlight during treatment. Using lip balm, moisturisers and a high protection sunscreen may help.
• It's very important not to become pregnant while using isotretinoin capsules and for at least 1 month after stopping. This is because isotretinoin can harm an unborn baby. If there's a chance you could become pregnant you'll be given a reminder card about this.
• If you become depressed or think about harming yourself while taking isotretinoin, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor straight away.
